Philippa Robbins' work to date includes large scale landscapes which are concerned with the space between the urban and the industrial, closely cropped portraits rendered almost anonymous through lack of peripheral information and loaded imagery of wires and of tablet packets.

"Though small, it's a marvel of brushwork. I think it's a staggering feat to capture a face in paint with the subject's eyes closed in such a way that the viewer knows the sitter was neither dead nor sleeping. And I love the man's colouring. Such a sense of calm, and yet he's flushed, as though just in from a brisk walk. It's a painting that always makes me want to get up to the studio to work!"
Clive Hicks-Jenkins 2010

Recent drawings and paintings reference these earlier works with the inclusion of portraits within nichos (Mexican, reliquary box frames) and still lifes within landscapes. Her work is at once familiar and unfamiliar with a strongly suggested but unresolved narrative.

Philippa Robbins was born in London in 1964 and lives and works in south Wales. She exhibits her paintings and drawings nationally and internationally and her paintings are in private collections in the U.K. and overseas.
